The Pirates of Penzance

Wow!!!!

What an incredible show Wittedrift High School put on this last week. What an amazing job.

The love, dedication and effort put in by all to make this production so very successful was evident. It was so awesome to see the students having fun while showing off their fabulous talent.

The little school with the big heart should be incredibly proud.

Director's note

The epic ocean voyages of years gone by were fraught with danger: storms, ocean currents, uncharted territory - and pirates. However, they were also suffused with the romance of the billowing sails, the incomparable sunsets and the discovery of magical lands.

The staging of a large-scale high school musical is much the same.

Our journey began with the auditioning of 250 eager participants, who had to be whittled down to the (still sizeable) cast of 58 and our able crew. We certainly encountered pirates and faced many obsta-cles, but this was tempered by discovery, camaraderie and regular, unbridled laughter.

Experience teaches you many lessons and none is more important than this: pick your people. I have been blessed to undertake every voyage with excellent and dedicated shipmates. Mrs Snyman is the ship's Executive Officer with whom you can go to war - nothing daunts her and the anchor remains steadfast; Mrs Boucher provides ships' rations to pirates, police and daughters alike, simultaneously lending a hand with everything - all while maintaining a smile; Mrs Basson is the efficient mistress of the wardrobe - ensuring the cast looks and feels shipshape.

Our collaboration with Plett Music Academy has enabled our ship to reach the magical places to which we aspired. I am in awe of the skill of this incredible lady, who has coached and cajoled our cast into becoming the voices you will hear during our show.

My final salute is to the incredible cast. Your talent, commitment and enthusiasm have made every league of this voyage memorable.

Our small school's Pirates of Penzance has huge heart.

I am proud beyond measure to be your Captain.

Ahoy, Leanne Solms
